THE much-needed facelift of the 35-year-old Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 1 begins today.
This was announced by Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) general manager ret. Gen. Jose Angel Honrado, who said the government is embarking on a P1.16- billion refurbishment that will begin with the removal of the escalator that connects the arrival and departure halls of the said terminal to provide more passenger movement areas.
Honrado said the renovation will take at least 18 months to complete and would include the total replacement of four comfort rooms at the arrival lobby as well as the one at the arrival extension area.
Also included in the extensive improvement project is the retrofitting of structural components of the entire terminal to make sure that it can withstand strong earthquakes and better ensure the safety of the passengers while inside the terminal.
The Duty Free shops at the convergence point of the two arrival concourses will also be removed and relocated while the offices behind the said shops, including the office of the Philippine National Police Aviation Security Group as well as the Day Room, will be relocated to a different floor to provide more space for arriving passengers.
Honrado said additional immigration counters will also be added at the arrival area so more passengers can be processed especially during peak hours.
This, as a couple of inclined walk-a-lators, similar to those found in malls, will be installed at the arrival area so passengers with baggage carts can easily go down from the arrival level down to the arrival extension area.
