Police arrested a suspect reportedly involved in the production of fake driver’s licenses just behind the Land Transportation Office (LTO) in Quezon City on Tuesday afternoon.

The suspect, Jose Buena, 29, was arrested following a brief chase by the policemen of the Kamuning Police Station at the latter’s rented unit at 22 Mapang-akit St., Barangay Pinyahan.

Police also recovered nine fake drivers licenses, 15 pairs of fake vehicle official receipts and certificate of registrations (OR/CR), a computer set, a printer, a scanner, a laminating machine, a number of hard blank plastic used in making the licenses, and clear plastic with Land Transportation Office (LTO) hologram marks from the suspects house.

The LTO has confirmed that the confiscated licenses and OR/CR are fake, police said.

Buena, who is currently detained at the Kamuning Police Station, has been charged before the city prosecutor’s office with falsification of public documents and violation of a city ordinance banning fixers from government offices.

Meanwhile, Supt. Crisostomo Mendoza, Kamuning Police Station commander, said that they trying to find three other men whom Buena said was working with him.

Apart from Buena’s group, Mendoza said they are also conducting surveillance operations against several other groups operating at the LTO.

Mendoza said they have been monitoring Buena for sometime after they received tips that the suspect has been engaged in the manufacture of the fake documents.

The police official said that his men were on covert police operations against fixers at the LTO when they chanced upon Buena at the back of the complex.

Police operatives approached Buena whom they tried to question. However, the suspect started running and took refuge at the rented unit in Mapang-akit St. where he was eventually caught by the policemen.

Mendoza believes that Buena’s group has ties with carnapping syndicates and illegal car traders who seek fake OR/CR which are believed to cost P5,000 apiece.

The group provides the fake licenses which they pass as real for P1,000 to unsuspecting applicants who find it a hassle to line up at the LTO.

On the other hand, Mendoza believes that there are also some individuals who also want to get fake licenses.

In the meantime, he said that they closely working with the LTO in weeding out insiders who are in cahoots with Buena and other groups.
